The diagnosis begins with the analysis of the medical history of the couple, through the following processes:

• Medicines.
• Reproductive history.
• Papanicolaou smear (female).
• Physical exam.
• Blood tests.
• Urine analysis.
• STD.
• Hormonal evaluation.
• Semen analysis (male).
• Female anatomy:
  • Ultrasound of the ovaries and uterus
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) due to structural problems. A pre-hospital x-ray test that looks inside the uterus and fallopian tubes.

For a woman to be fertile, her body must produce healthy eggs, which will meet sperm in a healthy uterus. Fertility can be affected due to the following situations:

• Endometriosis.
• Ovulation disorders.
• Damage or blockage of the fallopian tubes.
• Polycystic ovary syndrome.
• Elevated prolactin.
• Early menopause.
• Uterine fibers.
• Pelvic adhesions.
• Advanced maternal age (late 30s and early 40s).

For a man to be fertile, his sperm must be healthy. Infertility can arise, due to the following circumstances:

• Sperm abnormalities.
• Low sperm count.
• Sperm motility or impaired movement.

• Advanced paternal age.
